Dear Westchester Cornellian: TThe 2006-2007 year was another great year for the Cornell Alumni Association of Westchester (CAAW). We hosted several successful events, developed new connections between Westchester alumni and the University, and provided financial support to local students attending Cornell. The year in Review Several faculty members shared their expertise with CAAW in Westchester. Donald Smith, former Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, addressed our group and also attracted Vet School alumni in November. Frank Robinson, the Director of the Johnson Museum of Art, led private tours of the 17th century Dutch Masters paintings and the Greek and Roman collections at the Metropolitan Museum in January. Don Rakow, the Director of the Cornell Plantations and Mary Hirshfeld, chief botanist of the Plantations, led a guided tour of Rocky Hills, a spectacular private garden in Pleasantville, in May. Finally, Walter LaFeber shared his insights into the history of the United States' involvement in the Iraq war with a spellbound audience of 300 over dinner at Lake Isle Country Club.CAAW continued to support local programs for the Cornell Alumni Admissions Ambassador Network (CAAAN), including training CAAAN volunteers and meeting with/ traveling to Cornell with prospective applicants. CAAAN's dedicated members help Cornell identify the best young people in our community and help students understand how much Cornell has to offer. Our group, family and friends partnered with the Family Services of Westchester for our national Cornell Cares Day event in January. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves and gave a local White Plains grammar school a "refresh" with new paint and decoration and led sports and craft activities with area families at a mini carnival. Book awards were presented to outstanding high school seniors at most high schools in Westchester. In 2007, we awarded The 100 Most Notable Cornellians, a book that sets Cornell apart from the other top schools that present book awards. CAAW continued to provide scholarships to Cornell undergraduates from Westchester through our Bleakley-Bland Scholarship fund and your voluntary contributions (see the contribution box on the attached membership form). 2007-2008: Something for Everyone We plan to do even more in 2007-2008, including the following events:
Social Events:A family picnic in Bedford (with animals and barbeque), the Spirit of Zinck's Night, a pre-Valentine's Day
"educational" chocolate tasting, monthly Second Friday Lunch Club lunches, and an evening of tennis. Community Service:
This January, CAAW will again participate in Cornell Cares Day, a nation-wide
day of community service when local Cornell students, alumni, family,
and friends work side by side with a local not-for-profit organization to support our local community. Speakers/Tours:
Professsor Trevor Morrison will speak on the current Supreme Court and how it may change the law of the land,
Professor Mary Beth Norton will speak on witchcraft in Salem, Massachussetts, and Frank Robinson and Don Rakow will again
lead tours of the Metropolitan Museum and a private garden in Westchester, respectively. Sports: CAAW members will attend Ivy League football, basketball, and hockey games, including
Cornell's hockey game against Boston University at Madison Square Garden in November.(check the Upcoming Events section of this website). Become a
